The River That Circles the Town

Every castle needs a moat, and Albarracín grew its own. The river Guadalaviar swings around the great rock in a horseshoe, so the town sits almost entirely inside a loop of moving water. Today Polly declares a slow day and goes down to meet the river properly, the way one should meet anything that has been doing its job for this long.

Ogni castello ha bisogno di un fossato, e Albarracín se l'è fatto crescere da sola. Il fiume Guadalaviar gira attorno alla grande roccia a ferro di cavallo, così la città siede quasi interamente dentro un anello di acqua in movimento. Oggi Polly dichiara una giornata lenta e scende a conoscere il fiume come si deve, come si dovrebbe conoscere qualunque cosa che fa il proprio lavoro in silenzio da così tanto tempo.

Down in the gorge the air is cool and green. Poplars and willows lean over the current, dragonflies stitch blue lines above the shallows, and the water works at the rock the way it has for ages, patiently, without any particular deadline. Polly walks the riverside path slowly, the way Berta taught her, letting the town lose her kindly.

Giù nella gola l'aria è fresca e verde. Pioppi e salici si piegano sulla corrente, le libellule cuciono linee azzurre sopra i bassi fondali, e l'acqua lavora la roccia come fa da ere, con pazienza, senza nessuna scadenza precisa. Polly percorre piano il sentiero lungo il fiume, come le ha insegnato Berta, lasciando che la città la perda con gentilezza.

She spends the afternoon being useless in the best possible way. She watches water striders dimple the surface. She listens to the river change its accent at every bend, gravel here, deep stone there. High above, between two walls of rock, the pink houses peer down over their balconies as if checking that the moat is still on duty.

Passa il pomeriggio a essere inutile nel migliore dei modi. Guarda i gerridi increspare la superficie. Ascolta il fiume cambiare accento a ogni curva, ghiaia qui, pietra profonda là. In alto, tra due pareti di roccia, le case rosa si affacciano dai loro balconi come per controllare che il fossato sia ancora in servizio.

At dusk a fox comes down to drink at the far bank. For a moment the two of them regard each other over the moving water, bird and fox, neither in any hurry. Then the fox melts back into the shadows and Polly climbs the darkening lanes home, smelling of river and entirely satisfied with a day in which nothing important happened.

Al crepuscolo una volpe scende a bere sull'altra riva. Per un momento i due si osservano sopra l'acqua che scorre, uccello e volpe, nessuno dei due di fretta. Poi la volpe si scioglie di nuovo nell'ombra e Polly risale i vicoli che si fanno scuri, profumata di fiume e del tutto soddisfatta di una giornata in cui non è successo niente di importante.
