Berta and the Leaning Houses

Polly wakes to claws clicking on stone. An elderly stone marten is watching her from a drainpipe, whiskers first. She introduces herself as Berta, says she has lived inside these walls longer than most roofs have, and offers a tour before the day gets hot. A marten's tour, she warns, involves shortcuts. Polly says she is excellent at shortcuts.

Polly si sveglia al ticchettio di artigli sulla pietra. Una vecchia faina la osserva da un tubo di gronda, prima con i baffi. Si presenta come Berta, dice che vive dentro queste mura da più tempo di quasi tutti i tetti, e offre un giro turistico prima che arrivi il caldo. Un giro da faina, avverte, è fatto di scorciatoie. Polly risponde che nelle scorciatoie è bravissima.

The lanes of Albarracín do not believe in straight lines. They climb in steps, duck under archways, and squeeze between houses until the wooden balconies above nearly touch, so that neighbors could pass a cup of sugar across without leaning far. The walls are plastered in that soft pink that comes from the local earth, and every door seems built for someone a little smaller than expected.

I vicoli di Albarracín non credono nelle linee rette. Salgono a gradini, si infilano sotto gli archi e si stringono tra le case finché i balconi di legno lassù quasi si toccano, tanto che i vicini potrebbero passarsi una tazza di zucchero senza sporgersi troppo. At a corner, Berta stops with the pride of a museum guide. Above them rises a house that leans in every direction at once, narrow at the bottom, wide at the top, not one straight edge anywhere. It is called the Julianeta, and it is probably the most photographed crooked house in Spain. It has stood like this for centuries, Berta says, which is more than most straight houses manage.

A un angolo, Berta si ferma con l'orgoglio di una guida di museo. Sopra di loro si alza una casa che pende in tutte le direzioni insieme, stretta in basso, larga in alto, senza un solo bordo dritto. Si chiama la Julianeta, ed è probabilmente la casa storta più fotografata di Spagna. Sta così da secoli, dice Berta, che è più di quanto riescano a fare molte case dritte.

They end the morning on a rooftop, sharing a fig Berta produces from somewhere. Below them the pink town rearranges itself into stairways and chimneys. Polly asks how anyone finds their way here. Berta considers this. You do not find your way, she says. You let the town lose you kindly, and then you are home.

Finiscono la mattinata su un tetto, dividendo un fico che Berta tira fuori da chissà dove. Sotto di loro la città rosa si ricompone in scalinate e comignoli. Polly chiede come si faccia a orientarsi qui. Berta ci pensa. Non ti orienti, dice. Lasci che la città ti perda con gentilezza, e a quel punto sei a casa.
