Polly Takes the Bus

The bus arrived painted the color of an old postcard, and at the wheel sat a capybara with the calm of someone who has driven the same loop for years and still likes it. "Does this bus go downtown? I need the main square." The capybara nodded so slowly that the nod itself was reassuring, and the doors folded open like an invitation.

L'autobus è arrivato dipinto del colore di una vecchia cartolina, e al volante c'era un capibara con la calma di chi fa la stessa linea da anni e ancora gli piace. "Questo autobus va in centro? Mi serve la piazza principale." Il capibara ha annuito così lentamente che il gesto da solo rassicurava, e le porte si sono aperte come un invito.

"One ticket, please. It is my first time on this line." First times were the capybara's specialty. "How much is it? I only have coins today." The coins were counted into the tray one by one while the bus waited without a single impatient sound. Polly chose a window seat and watched the neighborhood reorganize itself: the market from rung to rung, the corner cafe, the fountain where everyone turns wrong.

"Un biglietto, per favore. È la mia prima volta su questa linea." Le prime volte erano la specialità del capibara. "Quanto costa? Oggi ho solo monete." Le monete sono cadute nel vassoio una a una mentre l'autobus aspettava senza un solo rumore di impazienza. Polly ha scelto un posto vicino al finestrino e ha guardato il quartiere mettersi in ordine da solo: il mercato, il bar all'angolo, la fontana dove tutti girano male.

"Where do I get off for the main square?" A wing was already hovering over the red button when the capybara tilted an ear backward. "The next stop! Perfect, I am on my way to the door." The square appeared, wide and full of pigeons with opinions. "Thank you for your patience! See you later!" The doors folded shut, the postcard rolled on, and Polly stood in the middle of the new city feeling, for the first time, like someone who knew the way home.

"Dove devo scendere per la piazza principale?" Un'ala era già sospesa sopra il pulsante rosso quando il capibara ha inclinato un orecchio all'indietro. "La prossima fermata! Perfetto, vado verso la porta." La piazza è comparsa, larga e piena di piccioni con opinioni. "Grazie per la pazienza! A dopo!" Le porte si sono chiuse, la cartolina ha proseguito il suo viaggio, e in mezzo alla città nuova Polly ha sentito per la prima volta cosa vuol dire conoscere la strada di casa.
