Polly Orders a Coffee

The rain decided for Polly. It started halfway across the square, and the nearest door was a corner cafe with fogged windows and a striped awning dripping in slow drops. "Hello, good afternoon!" A badger in a bow tie looked up from the coffee machine as if visitors on rainy days were his favorite kind.

결정을 내린 것은 비였다. 광장을 반쯤 건넜을 때 비가 내리기 시작했고, 가장 가까운 문은 모퉁이 카페였다. 창문에는 김이 서려 있었고, 줄무늬 차양에서는 빗방울이 천천히 떨어졌다. “안녕하세요!” 나비넥타이를 맨 오소리가 커피 기계에서 고개를 들었다. 비 오는 날의 손님이 제일 반갑다는 얼굴이었다.

"A coffee with milk, please. Not too hot, if possible." The badger nodded like someone taking the request very seriously, then slid a glass case forward without a word. Inside, golden and sugared, waited the famous ones. "Do you have churros? Everyone talks about them." He pretended to be offended that the question was even necessary. "For here, please. I want to sit by the window for a while."

“카페라테 한 잔 주세요. 가능하면 너무 뜨겁지 않게요.” 오소리는 그 주문을 아주 진지하게 받아들인 사람처럼 고개를 끄덕이고는, 아무 말 없이 유리 진열장을 앞으로 밀었다. 그 안에는 노릇하게 튀겨져 설탕이 뿌려진, 그 유명한 것들이 기다리고 있었다. “츄러스 있어요? 다들 그 이야기를 하더라고요.” 오소리는 그런 질문이 필요하다는 것 자체가 서운하다는 듯한 표정을 지어 보였다. “여기서 먹을게요. 창가에 잠깐 앉고 싶어요.”

The window seat came with the sound of rain and a view of umbrellas hurrying past. Polly dipped, tasted, and understood the entire neighborhood a little better. "The check, please. How much do I owe you?" The number was small; the discovery was not. "How delicious! I am definitely coming back tomorrow." The badger just polished a cup and smiled, because he had heard that before, and it was always true.

창가 자리에는 빗소리와, 서둘러 지나가는 우산들의 행렬이 함께 딸려 왔다. 폴리는 하나를 찍어 맛보았고, 이 동네를 조금 더 이해하게 되었다. “계산서 주세요. 얼마 드리면 될까요?” 숫자는 작았지만, 발견은 작지 않았다. “정말 맛있어요! 내일 꼭 다시 올게요.” 오소리는 컵을 닦으며 웃기만 했다. 그런 말은 전에도 들어 봤고, 언제나 사실이었기 때문이다.
