Fire in the Dark

The next morning Polly woke long before the sun. In a dark field outside the village, trucks were arriving with heavy baskets and long bags of folded cloth. The crews worked quietly by the light of their headlamps, talking to each other on handheld radios.

A la mañana siguiente, Polly se despertó mucho antes de que saliera el sol. En un campo oscuro fuera del pueblo, camiones llegaban con cestas pesadas y largas bolsas de tela doblada. Los equipos trabajaban en silencio bajo la luz de sus linternas frontales, comunicándose entre ellos por radios de mano.

Polly perched on a basket and watched. The crew dragged the balloon out of its bag and spread it flat across the ground, where it lay like a great sleeping whale. Then two powerful fans began to blow cold air into its open mouth, and slowly the whole shape began to swell.

Polly se sentó en una cesta y observó. El equipo sacó el globo de su bolsa y lo extendió sobre el suelo, donde yacía como una gran ballena dormida. Luego, dos ventiladores potentes comenzaron a soplar aire frío en su boca abierta, y lentamente toda la forma empezó a hincharse.

The pilot was holding a small helium balloon on a thin string. He let it go, and everyone stopped to watch it climb away into the dark. "The little balloon flies first," he told Polly. "It shows us where the wind means to carry us today."

El piloto sostenía un pequeño globo de helio con un hilo delgado. Lo soltó, y todos se detuvieron para verlo subir hacia la oscuridad. "El pequeño globo vuela primero", le dijo a Polly. "Nos muestra hacia dónde quiere llevarnos el viento hoy".

Then came the fire. The pilot squeezed the burner handle and a long flame roared into the open mouth of the balloon. One breath of fire, two, three. The great shape lifted its head off the ground and stood upright in the dark, glowing orange from the inside like a paper lantern.

Luego vino el fuego. El piloto apretó el mango del quemador y una larga llama rugió dentro de la boca abierta del globo. Un soplo de fuego, dos, tres. La gran forma levantó su cabeza del suelo y se puso de pie en la oscuridad, brillando naranja desde adentro como un farol de papel.
