The Final Bend

Polly woke up early, and her heart was already beating fast. The canyon grew darker and narrower around her, until the walls almost closed together above her head.

Polly se despertó temprano, y el corazón ya le latía con fuerza. El cañón se volvía cada vez más oscuro y estrecho a su alrededor, hasta que las paredes casi se juntaban por encima de su cabeza.

Then she saw it. At the final bend, a thin line of light stood waiting between the dark walls, like a door that someone had left open.

Entonces lo vio. En la última curva, una delgada línea de luz esperaba entre las paredes oscuras, como una puerta que alguien había dejado abierta.

Polly hopped around the bend, and the wall simply opened. In front of her rose a great temple, carved straight into the cliff, rose-red and glowing in the morning light, with tall columns climbing up the rock. People call it Al-Khazneh, the Treasury.

Polly avanzó dando saltitos hasta la curva, y la pared simplemente se abrió. Frente a ella se alzaba un gran templo, tallado directamente en el acantilado, de un rojo rosado que brillaba con la luz de la mañana, con altas columnas que subían por la roca. La gente lo llama Al-Khazneh, el Tesoro.

Nobody built this temple with bricks. Workers carved the whole building out of the living cliff, starting at the top and working down to the floor. And the little water channel ended here too. It had led her the entire way. Polly sat down in the sand and looked up for a long, long time.

Nadie construyó este templo con ladrillos. Los trabajadores tallaron todo el edificio en la roca viva, empezando por arriba y bajando hasta el suelo. Y el pequeño canal de agua también terminaba allí. La había guiado durante todo el camino. Polly se sentó en la arena y miró hacia arriba durante un buen rato, largo y silencioso.
