The Elephant Mountain

Polly arrived at dawn, flying low over a calm blue sea. Ahead of her, a long mountain rose straight out of the water, and from this side it looked just like a sleeping elephant. The people of the coast call it Montgó. Polly, a small parrot with a red head, a green body and little round glasses, flew straight towards it.

Polly llegó al amanecer, volando bajo sobre un mar azul y tranquilo. Delante de ella, una larga montaña salía directamente del agua, y desde este lado parecía un elefante dormido. La gente de la costa la llama Montgó. Polly, una lorita con la cabeza roja, el cuerpo verde y unas pequeñas gafas redondas, voló directa hacia ella.

At the foot of the mountain lay a small white town with narrow streets, terracotta roofs and a quiet fishing port. The town is called Xàbia, and it rests on the plain between the mountain and the sea.

Al pie de la montaña había un pequeño pueblo blanco, con calles estrechas, tejados de teja y un puerto pesquero tranquilo. El pueblo se llama Xàbia, y descansa en la llanura entre la montaña y el mar.

Polly landed high on the ridge, on rock that was still warm from the day before. The stone was the colour of honey. From up there she could see the whole coastline stretched out below her.

Polly aterrizó en lo alto de la cresta, sobre una roca que todavía guardaba el calor del día anterior. La piedra era del color de la miel. Desde allí arriba podía ver toda la costa extendida a sus pies.

Slowly the sun climbed out of the water, and its light turned the mountain and the town gold. Polly breathed in the salty air and made a decision. She would stay here for seven days.

Poco a poco el sol salió del agua, y su luz volvió dorados la montaña y el pueblo. Polly respiró el aire salado y tomó una decisión. Se quedaría aquí siete días.
