The Carved Cave

Polly dropped back down the face of the cliff to where it meets the sea. There, at the waterline, a dark mouth opened in the rock: the Cova Tallada, the carved cave, part cavern and part abandoned workshop.

Polly volvió a descolgarse por la pared del acantilado hasta donde este se encuentra con el mar. Allí, en la línea del agua, se abría una boca oscura en la roca: la Cova Tallada, la cueva cortada, mitad caverna y mitad taller abandonado.

Inside, the walls rose improbably flat and true. Centuries ago, quarrymen cut the stone out by hand, block after block, and hauled it away by boat. The bite of their tools is still printed in the rock, as crisp as if they had downed chisels a week ago.

Dentro, las paredes se alzaban asombrosamente planas y rectas. Hace siglos, los canteros sacaron la piedra a mano, bloque tras bloque, y se la llevaron en barca. El mordisco de sus herramientas sigue impreso en la roca, tan nítido como si hubieran soltado los cinceles la semana pasada.

All around her the stone gave off a warm, golden glow. Half the chamber was solid rock; the other half was sea, clear and blue, breathing gently in and out of the cave with each swell.

A su alrededor la piedra desprendía un resplandor cálido y dorado. La mitad de la sala era roca maciza; la otra mitad era mar, claro y azul, que respiraba suavemente dentro y fuera de la cueva con cada ola.

Light poured through the entrance and scattered itself across water and walls in restless patterns. Polly pressed a wing against the cool stone, fixing its colour in her memory. Golden rock, she thought, was worth remembering.

La luz entraba a raudales por la boca y se repartía en dibujos inquietos sobre el agua y las paredes. Polly apoyó un ala en la piedra fresca, grabándose su color en la memoria. La roca dorada, pensó, merecía ser recordada.
