The Forest Breathes

Morning came soft and grey, and Polly knew it was time to go. The whole forest was steaming. As the sun warmed the wet leaves, mist rose off the canopy in a thousand slow threads and gathered into low clouds. The forest was breathing out. Polly shook the rain from her blue-teal wings, climbed into the cool air, and looked once more at the green sea she was leaving.

Der Morgen kam sanft und grau, und Polly wusste, dass es Zeit war zu gehen. Der ganze Wald dampfte. Als die Sonne die nassen Blätter wärmte, stieg Nebel in tausend langsamen Fäden vom Blätterdach auf und sammelte sich zu tiefen Wolken. Der Wald atmete aus. Polly schüttelte den Regen von ihren blaugrünen Flügeln, stieg in die kühle Luft und blickte noch einmal auf das grüne Meer, das sie verließ.

From high up she could see what the forest was doing. All that rising mist was water, lifted from the leaves into the sky. It did not just stay overhead. Great rivers of it move through the air and carry rain far to the south, to fields and cities the forest will never see. Cut the forest down, and the rain goes quiet far away.

Von hoch oben konnte sie sehen, was der Wald tat. All dieser aufsteigende Nebel war Wasser, das von den Blättern in den Himmel gehoben wurde. Es blieb nicht einfach darüber. Große Flüsse davon bewegen sich durch die Luft und tragen Regen weit nach Süden, zu Feldern und Städten, die der Wald nie sehen wird. Wenn man den Wald abholzt, wird der Regen in der Ferne still.

Below her the brown river ran on, carrying the forest's water the other way, toward a sea very far off. Water above and water below. The trees and the river moved the same rain in two directions. Nothing here lived alone. Everything was joined to something larger.

Unter ihr floss der braune Fluss weiter und trug das Wasser des Waldes in die andere Richtung, zu einem Meer, das sehr weit entfernt ist. Wasser oben und Wasser unten. Die Bäume und der Fluss bewegten denselben Regen in zwei Richtungen. Nichts hier lebte allein. Alles war mit etwas Größerem verbunden.

Polly flew east, toward the distant ocean. She climbed until the canopy was one soft green skin over the world. Behind her, the Amazon went on breathing and raining on itself, as it had for longer than anyone could count. She did not look back. Some places you carry with you.

Polly flog nach Osten, in Richtung des fernen Ozeans. Sie stieg, bis das Blätterdach eine weiche grüne Haut über der Welt war. Hinter ihr atmete und regnete der Amazonas weiter auf sich selbst, wie er es schon länger tat, als irgendjemand zählen konnte. Sie schaute nicht zurück. Manche Orte trägt man mit sich.
