The Brown River

Polly left the treetops and followed the great river. From the ground it had looked like a road of water. From above it was almost a moving lake. In some places it was so wide that the far bank was only a thin green line. The water was warm and brown, full of mud from far away mountains. Polly's small round glasses fogged in the heat.

Polly verließ die Baumwipfel und folgte dem großen Fluss. Vom Boden aus hatte er wie eine Straße aus Wasser ausgesehen. Von oben war er fast ein wandernder See. An manchen Stellen war er so breit, dass das ferne Ufer nur eine dünne grüne Linie war. Das Wasser war warm und braun, voller Schlamm aus fernen Bergen. Pollys kleine runde Brille beschlug in der Hitze.

Then the water broke, and a smooth pink back rolled into the air. Polly flew lower. River dolphins live in the Amazon, far from any sea, and they are a soft pink color. They rose to breathe and sank again without a sound. Their eyes are small, because in muddy water it is easier to listen than to see.

Dann teilte sich das Wasser, und ein glatter rosa Rücken tauchte auf. Polly flog tiefer. Flussdelfine leben im Amazonas, weit weg von jedem Meer, und sie haben eine zarte rosa Farbe. Sie kamen hoch, um zu atmen, und tauchten wieder ab, ganz ohne Geräusch. Ihre Augen sind klein, denn im trüben Wasser ist es einfacher zu hören als zu sehen.

Where the river met the forest, the trees stood in the water. In the wet season the river floods the forest. Fish swim between the trunks. Some fish eat fallen fruit and carry the seeds to new places. Here the river plants trees, the way wind and birds do in other forests.

Dort, wo der Fluss auf den Wald traf, standen die Bäume im Wasser. In der Regenzeit überflutet der Fluss den Wald. Fische schwimmen zwischen den Stämmen umher. Manche Fische fressen heruntergefallene Früchte und tragen die Samen an neue Orte. Hier pflanzt der Fluss Bäume, so wie es anderswo der Wind und die Vögel tun.

By evening the river was still and silver. Polly floated for a while on the warm water and turned slowly with the current. Far ahead, the water was moving toward a sea she could not see. She rose, shook her wings, and flew back to the trees to sleep.

Am Abend war der Fluss ruhig und silbern. Polly trieb eine Weile auf dem warmen Wasser und drehte sich langsam mit der Strömung. Weit voraus floss das Wasser einem Meer entgegen, das sie nicht sehen konnte. Sie stieg auf, schüttelte ihre Flügel und flog zurück zu den Bäumen, um zu schlafen.
