The Sun That Won't Set

On her last night, Polly waited for the dark, but the dark never came. This far north, in the middle of summer, the sun does not really set. It rolls down toward the sea, glows red and gold on the horizon, and then climbs back up again. The whole island lay in soft golden light at midnight. Polly's red head and round glasses shone. She decided not to sleep at all.

Nella sua ultima notte, Polly aspettò il buio, ma il buio non arrivò mai. Così a nord, in piena estate, il sole non tramonta davvero. Scende verso il mare, brilla rosso e dorato all'orizzonte, e poi risale di nuovo. Tutta l'isola era immersa in una luce dorata e morbida a mezzanotte. There is a simple reason for this magic. This island sits so close to the top of the world that in summer the sun barely goes down, and the bright nights are very long. In winter it is the opposite. The sun almost hides, and the days are short and grey. The island swings between endless light and long darkness.

C'è una ragione semplice per questa magia. Quest'isola si trova così vicina alla cima del mondo che d'estate il sole scende appena, e le notti luminose sono lunghissime. In inverno succede il contrario. Il sole quasi si nasconde, e i giorni sono brevi e grigi. L'isola oscilla tra luce infinita e buio prolungato.

She flew up high one last time. From there she saw the whole week at once. The valley where two continents pull apart. The geysers. The new black lava. The white glacier. The crowded cliffs. Fire below and ice on top, all one young, restless island.

Polly volò in alto un'ultima volta. Da lassù vide tutta la settimana in un solo sguardo. La valle dove due continenti si allontanano. I geyser. La nuova lava nera. Il ghiacciaio bianco. Le scogliere affollate di uccelli. Fuoco sotto e ghiaccio sopra, tutto in un'unica isola giovane e irrequieta.

Then Polly turned out over the water. Behind her, Iceland stayed as she had found it, steaming and freezing at the same time, glowing in a sun that would not set. Still burning. Still cooling. Still being born.

Poi Polly virò verso il mare aperto. Dietro di lei, l'Islanda rimase come l'aveva trovata, fumante e gelida allo stesso tempo, illuminata da un sole che non voleva tramontare. Ancora in fiamme. Ancora in raffreddamento. Ancora in formazione.
