The Bird Cliffs

Polly flew west to the edge of the country, where tall cliffs drop into a grey sea. The cliffs were full of birds. Millions of seabirds nested there, calling all day like a noisy crowd. Polly flew in among them, her glasses wet with sea spray.

Polly flög västerut, till kanten av landet, där höga klippor faller ner mot det grå havet. Klipporna var fulla av fåglar. Miljontals havsfåglar hade sina bon där och skrek hela dagen som en högljudd folkmassa. Polly flög mellan dem, och glasögonen blev våta av havsvattnet.

She loved the puffins best. They are small and round, with orange feet and striped beaks. They dig nests in the grass on top of the cliff. In the water, they fly down to catch fish. Polly saw one come up with many small fish in its beak.

Hennes favoriter var lunnefåglarna. De är små och runda. Deras fötter är orange och deras näbbar är randiga. De bygger sina bon i gräset, högst upp på klippan. I vattnet dyker de ner och fångar fisk. Polly såg en komma upp med många små fiskar i näbben.

Another bird lived there too: the arctic tern. It makes the longest trip of any animal. Every year it flies from the top of the world to the bottom and back, always chasing summer.

Där bodde en annan fågel: den arktiska tärnan. Den gör den längsta resan av alla djur. Varje år flyger den från världens tak till andra änden och tillbaka. Den följer alltid sommaren.

In the long evening, the birds came home to the cliff. Polly found a quiet spot and watched the waves.

Under den långa eftermiddagen kom fåglarna tillbaka till klippan. Polly hittade en lugn plats och tittade på vågorna.
