The Ice That Hides Fire

Polly flew east until the black land turned white. Ahead of her lay the largest glacier in Europe. The ice was so wide it makes its own weather. From above it looked like a frozen ocean, blue-white and silent. Polly landed on it, and the cold came up through her feet. Against all that white, her red head and blue-teal wings looked very bright.

Polly voló hacia el este hasta que la tierra negra se volvió blanca. Frente a ella se extendía el glaciar más grande de Europa. Era tan ancho que creaba su propio clima. Desde arriba parecía un océano congelado, azul y blanco, completamente silencioso. Polly aterrizó sobre él y el frío le subió por las patas. Contra toda aquella blancura, su cabeza roja y sus alas azul verdosas brillaban con fuerza.

She found a cave beneath the ice and gasped. The walls glowed deep blue. This ice is not from last winter. It is snow that fell hundreds of years ago. The snow was pressed down until all the air was gone, and ice with no air looks blue. A small river ran along the floor of the cave.

Encontró una cueva bajo el hielo y se quedó sin palabras. Las paredes brillaban de un azul intenso. Este hielo no era de el invierno pasado. Era nieve que había caído hacía cientos de años. La nieve se fue comprimiendo poco a poco hasta que todo el aire desapareció, y el hielo sin aire se ve azul. Por el suelo de la cueva corría un pequeño río.

Then Polly learned a strange thing. Under the glacier sit volcanoes, still warm. Sometimes one erupts beneath the ice, melts a huge amount at once, and sends a sudden flood across the land. Here, fire and ice live one on top of the other.

Entonces Polly descubrió algo asombroso. Debajo del glaciar dormían volcanes, todavía calientes. A veces uno entraba en erupción bajo el hielo, derretía una enorme cantidad de golpe y lanzaba una inundación repentina sobre la tierra. Aquí, el fuego y el hielo vivían uno encima del otro.

At the edge of the glacier was a quiet lagoon. Great blue icebergs broke away and floated toward the sea. Some washed onto a black beach and shone like jewels. Polly sat on a small iceberg and let it carry her slowly, nowhere at all.

Al borde del glaciar había una laguna tranquila. Grandes icebergs azules se desprendían y flotaban hacia el mar. Algunos llegaban hasta una playa negra y brillaban como joyas. Polly se sentó sobre un pequeño iceberg y se dejó llevar despacio, sin rumbo, sin prisa, sin ningún lugar adonde ir.
