The Ice That Hides Fire

Polly flew east until the black land turned white. Ahead of her lay the largest glacier in Europe. The ice was so wide it makes its own weather. From above it looked like a frozen ocean, blue-white and silent. Polly landed on it, and the cold came up through her feet. Against all that white, her red head and blue-teal wings looked very bright.

Polly flog nach Osten, bis das schwarze Land weiß wurde. Vor ihr lag der größte Gletscher Europas. Das Eis war so breit, dass es sein eigenes Wetter erzeugte. Von oben sah es aus wie ein gefrorener Ozean - blau-weiß und still. Polly landete darauf, und die Kälte kroch ihr durch die Füße. Gegen all das Weiß leuchteten ihr roter Kopf und ihre blaugrünen Flügel besonders hell.

She found a cave beneath the ice and gasped. The walls glowed deep blue. This ice is not from last winter. It is snow that fell hundreds of years ago. The snow was pressed down until all the air was gone, and ice with no air looks blue. A small river ran along the floor of the cave.

Sie entdeckte eine Höhle unter dem Eis und hielt den Atem an. Die Wände schimmerten in tiefem Blau. Dieses Eis stammt nicht vom letzten Winter. Es ist Schnee, der vor Hunderten von Jahren gefallen ist. Der Schnee wurde so stark zusammengepresst, dass alle Luft entwich - und Eis ohne Luft sieht blau aus. Ein kleiner Fluss floss am Boden der Höhle entlang.

Then Polly learned a strange thing. Under the glacier sit volcanoes, still warm. Sometimes one erupts beneath the ice, melts a huge amount at once, and sends a sudden flood across the land. Here, fire and ice live one on top of the other.

Dann erfuhr Polly etwas Seltsames. Unter dem Gletscher schlummern Vulkane, die noch immer warm sind. Manchmal bricht einer unter dem Eis aus, schmilzt auf einen Schlag riesige Mengen Eis und schickt eine plötzliche Flut über das Land. Hier leben Feuer und Eis übereinander, Seite an Seite.

At the edge of the glacier was a quiet lagoon. Great blue icebergs broke away and floated toward the sea. Some washed onto a black beach and shone like jewels. Polly sat on a small iceberg and let it carry her slowly, nowhere at all.

Am Rand des Gletschers lag eine ruhige Lagune. Große blaue Eisberge brachen ab und trieben langsam Richtung Meer. Manche wurden an einen schwarzen Strand gespült und glänzten dort wie Edelsteine. Polly setzte sich auf einen kleinen Eisberg und ließ sich treiben - langsam, ohne Ziel.
