The Seam of the World

Polly came down from a low grey sky and found a country that looked brand new. There were no soft green hills, only black rock, bright moss, and thin lines of steam rising from the ground, as if the earth was breathing. Her red head, green body, and small round glasses were the most colourful things for kilometres. This was Iceland.

Polly descendió desde un cielo gris y bajo, y encontró un país que parecía recién nacido. No había colinas verdes ni suaves, solo roca negra, musgo brillante y finas columnas de vapor que subían del suelo, como si la tierra estuviera respirando. Su cabeza roja, su cuerpo verde y sus pequeñas gafas redondas eran las cosas más coloridas en kilómetros a la redonda. Esto era Islandia.

The whole island is here by accident, a happy one. Iceland sits on top of a giant crack in the floor of the ocean. Here, two of the great plates that carry the world are slowly pulling apart. The island also sits over a hot spot, where heat rises from deep inside the planet. Fire below, cold sea around. That is the secret of this place.

Toda la isla existe por accidente, aunque uno afortunado. Islandia se asienta sobre una enorme grieta en el fondo del océano. Aquí, dos de las grandes placas tectónicas que sostienen el mundo se están separando lentamente. La isla también se encuentra sobre un punto caliente, donde el calor sube desde las profundidades del planeta. Fuego abajo, mar frío alrededor. Ese es el secreto de este lugar.

Polly flew to a long valley where you can see the crack. It is a deep green canyon with tall rock walls. One wall belongs to North America. The other wall belongs to Europe. Polly hopped from one side to the other and crossed between two continents in one afternoon. The gap grows a little wider every year.

Polly voló hasta un largo valle donde se puede ver la grieta. Es un cañón de color verde intenso con paredes de roca muy altas. Una pared pertenece a América del Norte. La otra pertenece a Europa. Polly saltó de un lado al otro y cruzó entre dos continentes en una sola tarde. La separación crece un poco más cada año.

By evening the steam turned soft pink. Long ago, people met in this valley to make their laws. Polly found a mossy ledge and rested. She listened to the ground settle below her. Here, the land is never quite finished.

Al atardecer, el vapor se volvió de un rosa suave. Hace mucho tiempo, la gente se reunía en este valle para crear sus leyes. Polly encontró una repisa cubierta de musgo y descansó. Escuchó cómo el suelo se acomodaba bajo ella. Aquí, la tierra nunca termina del todo de formarse.
