The Seam of the World

Polly came down out of a low grey sky and found a country that looked newly made. There were no soft green hills here, only black rock, bright moss, and thin ribbons of steam rising straight up from the ground, as if the earth were quietly breathing. Her red head and bright green body were the most colourful things for many kilometres, and her small round black-rim glasses fogged in the cool, damp air. This was Iceland, and Polly had never seen anywhere like it.

Polly descendió desde un cielo bajo y plomizo y encontró un país que parecía recién salido de las manos del tiempo. Aquí no había suaves colinas verdes, sino roca negra, musgo brillante y finas cintas de vapor que ascendían verticalmente desde el suelo, como si la tierra respirara en silencio. Su cabeza roja y su cuerpo verde intenso eran las cosas más coloridas en muchos kilómetros a la redonda, y sus pequeñas gafas redondas de montura negra se empañaron con el aire fresco y húmedo. Esto era Islandia, y Polly jamás había visto nada igual.

The whole island is a kind of happy accident. Iceland sits on top of a giant crack that runs along the floor of the ocean, a place where two of the great plates that carry the world are slowly pulling apart. It also sits over a hot spot, where heat rises from deep inside the planet. Fire from below, cold sea all around. That is the secret hiding under everything she would see this week.

Toda la isla es una especie de feliz accidente. Islandia se asienta sobre una grieta gigantesca que recorre el fondo del océano, un lugar donde dos de las grandes placas que sostienen el mundo se separan lentamente. Además, se encuentra sobre un punto caliente, donde el calor asciende desde las profundidades del planeta. Fuego desde abajo, mar helado por todos lados. Ese es el secreto que se esconde bajo todo lo que vería durante esa semana.

She flew to a long valley where the split is easy to see, a deep green crack with tall rock walls on either side. The strange thing is what those two walls are. One side belongs to North America. The other side belongs to Europe. Polly hopped from one wall to the other and crossed between two continents in a single afternoon. The gap grows a little wider every year, about as fast as your fingernails grow.

Voló hasta un largo valle donde la fractura se aprecia con claridad: una profunda grieta verde con altas paredes de roca a ambos lados. Lo curioso es lo que representan esas dos paredes. Un lado pertenece a América del Norte. El otro, a Europa. Polly saltó de una pared a la otra y cruzó entre dos continentes en una sola tarde. La brecha se ensancha un poco cada año, más o menos a la misma velocidad a la que crecen las uñas.

By evening the steam had turned soft pink in the last light. Long ago, people used to gather in this very valley to make their laws, calling out across the same crack that was slowly tearing their island in two. Polly tucked herself into a mossy ledge, listened to the ground tick and settle beneath her, and understood that here the land itself is never quite finished.

Al caer la tarde, el vapor se tiñó de un suave rosa con los últimos rayos de luz. Hace mucho tiempo, la gente solía reunirse en ese mismo valle para dictar sus leyes, proclamándolas a voz en cuello sobre la misma grieta que partía lentamente su isla en dos. Polly se acomodó en una repisa cubierta de musgo, escuchó cómo la tierra crujía y se asentaba bajo ella, y comprendió que aquí el paisaje nunca termina del todo de hacerse a sí mismo.
