The next day, Polly flew high with the vultures. They went up in slow circles on the warm air. Her small green body looked funny next to their huge wings, but they made room for her. Her round glasses flashed in the sun.

Al día siguiente, Polly voló muy alto junto a los buitres. Subieron en círculos lentos, llevados por el aire cálido. Su pequeño cuerpo verde se veía gracioso al lado de esas alas enormes, pero ellos le hicieron espacio. Sus gafas redondas brillaban bajo el sol.

Vultures are the news service of the Serengeti. Each bird can see a meal from kilometres away. But the real trick is this: they also watch each other. When one bird goes down, the others see it and follow. News travels across the whole plain without a sound.

Los buitres son el servicio de noticias del Serengeti. Cada ave puede ver una presa desde kilómetros de distancia. Pero el verdadero secreto es este: también se vigilan entre sí. The smallest workers are in the grass. Dung beetles roll balls of dung much heavier than their own bodies. At night, a beetle climbs on top of its ball and looks at the Milky Way. The stars show it how to roll in a straight line. Scientists proved this.

Los trabajadores más pequeños viven en la hierba. Los escarabajos peloteros ruedan bolas de estiércol mucho más pesadas que ellos mismos. Por la noche, un escarabajo sube encima de su bola y mira la Vía Láctea. Las estrellas le indican cómo rodar en línea recta. Los científicos lo han demostrado.

By evening Polly understood. Nothing on this plain is wasted. Everything has a job. The grass feeds the herds. The herds feed the hunters. Everything left feeds someone smaller. Polly flew home slowly, in no hurry at all.

Al atardecer, Polly lo entendió todo. En esta llanura no se desperdicia nada. Cada ser tiene una tarea. La hierba alimenta a las manadas. Las manadas alimentan a los cazadores. Todo lo que sobra alimenta a alguien más pequeño. Polly voló a casa despacio, sin ninguna prisa.
