Crossing the Urals

On the third morning, the train stopped at Yekaterinburg.

În a treia dimineață, trenul s-a oprit la Ekaterinburg.

Galina had left in the night. Pavel was still asleep. Two new passengers had come on. A young soldier and an older man with a fishing tackle box.

Galina plecase în timpul nopții. Pavel încă dormea. Doi pasageri noi urcaseră. Un tânăr soldat și un bărbat mai în vârstă cu o cutie de pescuit.

Yekaterinburg is the biggest city in the Urals. The Ural Mountains divide Europe from Asia. They are not tall, but they are very old. They are 500 million years old. They are some of the oldest mountains on Earth.

Ekaterinburg este cel mai mare oraș din Ural. Munții Ural despart Europa de Asia. Nu sunt înalți, dar sunt foarte vechi. Au 500 de milioane de ani. Sunt unii dintre cei mai vechi munți de pe Pământ.

The Trans-Siberian crosses the Urals here. There is a small marker by the tracks. One side says EUROPE. The other side says ASIA.

Transsiberianul traversează Uralul aici. Există un mic indicator lângă șine. Pe o parte scrie EUROPA. Pe cealaltă parte scrie ASIA.

The new passenger with the tackle box opened it. He laid out his fishing lures on the table. He arranged them by colour.

Noul pasager cu cutia de pescuit a deschis-o. Și-a așezat momelile pe masă. Le-a aranjat după culoare.

"Where do you fish?" Polly asked.

„Unde pescuiești?” a întrebat Polly.

"Lake Baikal," he said. "In three days. Omul. The fish of Baikal. You will not find it anywhere else in the world."

„Lacul Baikal,” a spus el. „În trei zile. Omul. Peștele din Baikal. Nu îl vei găsi nicăieri altundeva în lume.”

Later, the train passed the marker in a small clearing. EUROPE on one side. ASIA on the other. Three tourists waved at the train. Pavel waved back from inside.

Mai târziu, trenul a trecut pe lângă indicator într-o mică poiană. EUROPA pe o parte. ASIA pe cealaltă. Trei turiști au făcut cu mâna trenului. Pavel le-a răspuns cu un salut din interior.

The train had crossed a continent the way you cross a small street.

Trenul traversase un continent așa cum traversezi o stradă mică.
