Crossing the Urals

On the third morning, the train stopped at Yekaterinburg.

A harmadik reggelen a vonat megállt Jekatyerinburgban.

Galina had left in the night. Pavel was still asleep. Two new passengers had come on. A young soldier and an older man with a fishing tackle box.

Galina az éjjel távozott. Pavel még aludt. Két új utas szállt fel. Egy fiatal katona és egy idősebb férfi, aki egy horgászdobozzal érkezett.

Yekaterinburg is the biggest city in the Urals. The Ural Mountains divide Europe from Asia. They are not tall, but they are very old. They are 500 million years old. They are some of the oldest mountains on Earth.

Jekatyerinburg az Urál legnagyobb városa. Az Urál-hegység választja el Európát Ázsiától. Nem magasak, de nagyon régiek. 500 millió évesek. A Föld egyik legrégebbi hegysége.

The Trans-Siberian crosses the Urals here. There is a small marker by the tracks. One side says EUROPE. The other side says ASIA.

A Transzszibériai vasút itt szeli át az Urált. Van egy kis jelzőtábla a sínek mellett. Az egyik oldalon az áll: EURÓPA. A másik oldalon: ÁZSIA.

The new passenger with the tackle box opened it. He laid out his fishing lures on the table. He arranged them by colour.

Az új utas kinyitotta a horgászdobozát. Az asztalra rakta a horgászcsalijait. Színek szerint rendezte őket.

"Where do you fish?" Polly asked.

"Hol szokott horgászni?" kérdezte Polly.

"Lake Baikal," he said. "In three days. Omul. The fish of Baikal. You will not find it anywhere else in the world."

"A Bajkál-tónál," mondta. "Három nap múlva. Omul. A Bajkál hala. Sehol máshol nem található meg a világon."

Later, the train passed the marker in a small clearing. EUROPE on one side. ASIA on the other. Three tourists waved at the train. Pavel waved back from inside.

Később a vonat elhaladt a jelzőtábla mellett egy kis tisztáson. Az egyik oldalon EURÓPA. A másikon ÁZSIA. Három turista integetett a vonatnak. Pavel visszaintegetett belülről.

The train had crossed a continent the way you cross a small street.

A vonat úgy kelt át egy kontinensen, mintha csak egy kis utcán ment volna át.
