The Birch Forests

On the second morning, the train was already 400 kilometres east of Moscow.

În a doua dimineață, trenul era deja la 400 de kilometri est de Moscova.

Polly woke on the small table. The light was soft and grey. Galina, the older woman, was drinking tea from a glass with a metal holder.

Polly s-a trezit pe masa mică. Lumina era blândă și gri. Galina, femeia mai în vârstă, bea ceai dintr-un pahar cu suport metalic.

"Birches," she said.

"Mesteacăni," a spus ea.

Outside, white trees were rushing past at sixty kilometres per hour. They went on and on. They filled the whole landscape.

Afară, copacii albi treceau în grabă cu șaizeci de kilometri pe oră. Se întindeau la nesfârșit. Umpleau întregul peisaj.

This is the Russian birch belt. White birch grows in many cold places where other trees cannot.

Aceasta este centura de mesteacăn a Rusiei. Mesteacănul alb crește în multe locuri reci unde alți copaci nu pot.

The young man, Pavel, looked up. "You are the parrot," he said. He went back to his laptop.

Tânărul, Pavel, a ridicat privirea. "Tu ești papagalul," a spus el. S-a întors la laptopul său.

Galina poured tea for Polly. It was amber. A slice of lemon floated on top. The samovar had been hot for twelve hours.

Galina a turnat ceai pentru Polly. Era de culoarea chihlimbarului. O felie de lămâie plutea deasupra. Samovarul fusese fierbinte timp de douăsprezece ore.

Polly drank a sip. It was hot and sweet.

Polly a luat o înghițitură. Era fierbinte și dulce.

"The longest part of this trip is the trees," Galina said. "You sit in a train for six days and look at trees. There is no end to them."

"Cea mai lungă parte a acestei călătorii sunt copacii," a spus Galina. "Stai în tren timp de șase zile și te uiți la copaci. Nu se mai termină."

Forty percent of Russia is forest. Russia has twenty percent of all the trees in the world.

Patruzeci la sută din Rusia este pădure. Rusia are douăzeci la sută din toți copacii din lume.

Polly drank again. Pavel typed. Galina read her book. Outside, the birches kept passing.

Polly a băut din nou. Pavel tasta. Galina citea cartea ei. Afară, mesteacănii continuau să treacă.
