The Birch Forests

On the second morning, the train was already four hundred kilometres east of Moscow. Polly woke up on the small folding table. The light through the window was the soft grey of a northern summer morning. Galina, the older woman, was already drinking tea from a glass in a metal holder.

Am zweiten Morgen war der Zug bereits vierhundert Kilometer östlich von Moskau. Polly wachte auf dem kleinen Klapptisch auf. Das Licht durch das Fenster war das sanfte Grau eines nördlichen Sommermorgens. Galina, die ältere Frau, trank schon Tee aus einem Glas in einem Metallhalter.

"Birches," she said.

"Birken", sagte sie.

Polly looked. Outside, white-trunked trees were running past at sixty kilometres an hour. They were everywhere. They went on. They were not in groves or clearings. They were the entire landscape.

Polly schaute hinaus. Draußen flogen Bäume mit weißen Stämmen mit sechzig Kilometern pro Stunde vorbei. Sie waren überall. Sie hörten nicht auf. Sie standen nicht in Hainen oder Lichtungen. Sie waren die gesamte Landschaft.

This was the western edge of the Russian birch belt. White birch has the widest natural range of any deciduous tree on Earth. It grows where almost nothing else will. It is the tree that says: there has been a fire here, or, there will be a forest here, but I am here first.

Dies war der westliche Rand des russischen Birkenwaldes. Die Weißbirke hat das größte natürliche Verbreitungsgebiet aller Laubbäume der Erde. Sie wächst dort, wo fast nichts anderes gedeiht. Sie ist der Baum, der sagt: Hier hat es gebrannt, oder, hier wird ein Wald sein, aber ich bin zuerst hier.

The young man with the laptop, whose name turned out to be Pavel, looked up. "You are the parrot," he said in flat English. "I noticed." He went back to typing.

Der junge Mann mit dem Laptop, dessen Name sich als Pavel herausstellte, schaute auf. "Du bist der Papagei", sagte er in flachem Englisch. "Ich habe es bemerkt." Er tippte weiter.

Galina poured a second glass of tea and offered it to Polly. It was the colour of amber. A thin slice of lemon floated on top. The samovar at the end of the carriage had been running for twelve hours straight.

Galina goss ein zweites Glas Tee ein und bot es Polly an. Es war die Farbe von Bernstein. Eine dünne Scheibe Zitrone schwamm obenauf. Der Samowar am Ende des Wagens lief seit zwölf Stunden ununterbrochen.

Polly drank a sip carefully off the edge of the glass. It was very hot and very sweet.

Polly nahm vorsichtig einen Schluck vom Rand des Glases. Es war sehr heiß und sehr süß.

"The longest part of this trip is the trees," Galina said. "People do not understand this until they ride it. You sit in a train for six days and you look out at trees. There is no end to them."

"Der längste Teil dieser Reise sind die Bäume", sagte Galina. "Die Leute verstehen das nicht, bis sie es selbst erleben. Man sitzt sechs Tage lang im Zug und schaut auf Bäume. Es gibt kein Ende."

The taiga begins past the Volga. About forty percent of Russia's land area is taiga. The country contains roughly twenty percent of all the world's standing forest.

Die Taiga beginnt hinter der Wolga. Etwa vierzig Prozent der Landfläche Russlands sind Taiga. Das Land enthält ungefähr zwanzig Prozent aller stehenden Wälder der Welt.

Polly drank a second sip. Pavel typed. Galina returned to her book. Outside, four hundred kilometres slid past as if it were one continuous birch.

Polly trank einen zweiten Schluck. Pavel tippte weiter. Galina kehrte zu ihrem Buch zurück. Draußen glitten vierhundert Kilometer vorbei, als wäre es ein einziger, endloser Birkenwald.
