Goodbye to Pasta

On the seventh morning, Polly came to the tank early. The lab was quiet.

Pasta was at the front of the tank. This was new. For six days, the octopus had been folded in her pipe, or in a corner. Today she was pressed against the glass. All eight arms were spread. Her eye was level with Polly's.

Η Ζυμαρικά ήταν μπροστά στη δεξαμενή. Αυτό ήταν κάτι καινούργιο. Για έξι μέρες, το χταπόδι ήταν χωμένο στο σωλήνα της ή σε μια γωνία. Σήμερα ήταν κολλημένη στο γυαλί. Και τα οκτώ πλοκάμια της ήταν απλωμένα. Το μάτι της ήταν στο ίδιο επίπεδο με της Polly.

They looked at each other.

Κοιτάχτηκαν.

What passes between a parrot and an octopus is probably not friendship. Octopuses can sense warmth through their skin. They can sense movement through their suckers. The octopus was collecting information.

Αυτό που συμβαίνει μεταξύ ενός παπαγάλου και ενός χταποδιού πιθανότατα δεν είναι φιλία. Τα χταπόδια μπορούν να αισθανθούν τη ζεστασιά μέσα από το δέρμα τους. Μπορούν να αισθανθούν την κίνηση μέσω των βεντουζών τους. Το χταπόδι συγκέντρωνε πληροφορίες.

Polly hopped along the rim. The octopus's eye tracked her. When Polly stopped, the eye stopped.

Η Polly πήδηξε κατά μήκος της άκρης. Το μάτι του χταποδιού την παρακολουθούσε. Όταν η Polly σταμάτησε, το μάτι σταμάτησε.

For seven minutes they watched each other.

Για επτά λεπτά κοιτάχτηκαν.

Then the octopus did something new. She slowly unfurled one arm. She pressed the tip of it against the inside of the glass, exactly opposite Polly's foot. The suckers spread, then stilled.

Τότε το χταπόδι έκανε κάτι καινούργιο. Αργά ξετύλιξε ένα πλοκάμι. Πίεσε την άκρη του στο εσωτερικό του γυαλιού, ακριβώς απέναντι από το πόδι της Polly. Οι βεντούζες απλώθηκαν και μετά ηρέμησαν.

Polly touched the outside of the glass with her beak.

Η Polly άγγιξε το εξωτερικό του γυαλιού με το ράμφος της.

The arm stayed for one long minute. Then it slid back into the water.

Το πλοκάμι έμεινε για ένα μεγάλο λεπτό. Μετά γλίστρησε πίσω στο νερό.

Chiara came in with two coffees. "You are leaving," she said. "Travel safely."

Η Chiara μπήκε με δύο καφέδες. "Φεύγεις," είπε. "Ταξίδεψε με ασφάλεια."

Polly flew out of the institute. The Bay of Naples opened in front of her. She climbed and found the wind.

Η Polly πέταξε έξω από το ινστιτούτο. Ο Κόλπος της Νάπολης άνοιξε μπροστά της. Ανέβηκε και βρήκε τον άνεμο.
