The Editor of Itself

On the sixth morning, Chiara made coffee. She sat by the tank with Polly.

Pasta was hanging upside down. Her body pulsed slowly. Her arms drifted.

Pasta era agățată cu capul în jos. Corpul ei pulsa încet. Brațele ei pluteau.

"I want to tell you one more thing," Chiara said. "It is the strangest thing I know about octopuses."

"Vreau să-ți mai spun ceva," a spus Chiara. "Este cel mai ciudat lucru pe care îl știu despre caracatițe."

DNA is the long-term plan of an animal. RNA is the working copy.

ADN-ul este planul pe termen lung al unui animal. ARN-ul este copia de lucru.

In most animals, the RNA matches the DNA. But in octopuses, the RNA does not match. The cell rewrites parts of the RNA as it makes it. Most of the edits happen in the nervous system.

La majoritatea animalelor, ARN-ul se potrivește cu ADN-ul. Dar la caracatițe, ARN-ul nu se potrivește. Celula rescrie părți din ARN pe măsură ce îl creează. Majoritatea modificărilor au loc în sistemul nervos.

"Why?" Chiara said. "It lets the octopus change its nervous system. It can tune its own brain to the water temperature or to its food."

"De ce?" a spus Chiara. "Permite caracatiței să își schimbe sistemul nervos. Își poate ajusta creierul la temperatura apei sau la hrana sa."

Pasta drifted. Her skin near the eyes turned soft pink and brown.

Pasta plutea. Pielea ei de lângă ochi devenea roz pal și maro.

"Each octopus is a slightly different animal," Chiara said. "Same DNA. But the working machinery is built fresh, for that water and that food."

"Fiecare caracatiță este un animal puțin diferit," a spus Chiara. "Același ADN. Dar mecanismul de lucru este construit proaspăt, pentru acea apă și acea hrană."

Polly thought about her own brain. It was hers. She did not want it to change. But she liked knowing that animals like Pasta existed.

Polly s-a gândit la propriul ei creier. Era al ei. Nu voia să se schimbe. Dar îi plăcea să știe că există animale ca Pasta.
