The Body That Thinks

On the third morning, Chiara put a small clear maze in the tank. There was crab meat at the centre. The way through had two right turns and a left turn.

Trećeg jutra, Chiara je stavila mali prozirni labirint u akvarij. U središtu je bilo meso raka. Put kroz labirint imao je dva skretanja desno i jedno lijevo.

Pasta watched from her corner.

Pasta je promatrala iz svog kuta.

Pasta sent two arms toward the maze. Her body did not move. The arms went different ways. One went on top. One went inside.

Pasta je poslala dvije ruke prema labirintu. Njeno tijelo se nije pomaknulo. Ruke su išle različitim putevima. Jedna je išla iznad. Druga je ušla unutra.

An octopus has many neurons. Two thirds of them are in the arms, not in the head. Each arm has its own nervous system. Each arm can solve a problem.

Hobotnica ima mnogo neurona. Dvije trećine njih su u rukama, a ne u glavi. Svaka ruka ima svoj vlastiti živčani sustav. Svaka ruka može riješiti problem.

The first arm went through the maze. It turned at the corners. The second arm found a small gate. The first arm pushed from inside. The second arm pushed from outside. The gate opened.

Prva ruka je prošla kroz labirint. Skrenula je na uglovima. Druga ruka je pronašla mala vrata. Prva ruka je gurala iznutra. Druga ruka je gurala izvana. Vrata su se otvorila.

The arm took the crab meat.

Ruka je uzela meso raka.

Pasta had not moved her body.

Pasta nije pomaknula svoje tijelo.

Chiara watched her video. "The arms got the food," she said. "Did the octopus solve the maze, or did the arms solve it? We do not know."

Chiara je gledala svoj video. "Ruke su uzele hranu," rekla je. "Je li hobotnica riješila labirint ili su ruke to učinile? Ne znamo."

Polly looked at Pasta. The octopus pulled the crab meat to her beak.

Polly je pogledala Pastu. Hobotnica je povukla meso raka prema svom kljunu.
