The Bay of Naples

Polly came in over the Bay of Naples in late morning. The water was the colour of green glass. Mount Vesuvius sat on the far side of the bay, partly hidden by haze. The air smelled of salt and diesel from fishing boats.

Polly kam am späten Vormittag über die Bucht von Neapel herein. Das Wasser hatte die Farbe von grünem Glas. Der Vesuv thronte auf der anderen Seite der Bucht, teilweise von Dunst verdeckt. Die Luft roch nach Salz und Diesel von den Fischerbooten.

She followed the shoreline. She could see laundry hanging from balconies and scooters in the streets.

Sie folgte der Küstenlinie. Sie konnte Wäsche sehen, die von Balkonen hing, und Motorroller in den Straßen.

Her destination was an old building on the water. A small brass plaque read STAZIONE ZOOLOGICA ANTON DOHRN, FONDATA 1872.

Polly knew about this place. It had been founded by a German zoologist named Anton Dohrn. The Bay of Naples is one of the richest sea ecosystems in Europe. The institute has been studying octopuses since 1873. It is the oldest marine biology institute still working in the world.

Polly kannte diesen Ort. Er war von einem deutschen Zoologen namens Anton Dohrn gegründet worden. Die Bucht von Neapel ist eines der reichsten Meeresökosysteme Europas. Das Institut erforscht seit 1873 Oktopusse. Es ist das älteste noch arbeitende Meeresbiologie-Institut der Welt.

She perched on the railing. A young researcher in a navy lab coat unlocked the back door. She saw Polly and smiled. "Come on in."

Sie setzte sich auf das Geländer. Eine junge Forscherin in einem marineblauen Laborkittel schloss die Hintertür auf. Sie sah Polly und lächelte. "Komm rein."

The building smelled of seawater. Long corridors ran between rooms full of tanks. Through the glass walls, Polly saw sardines, a small octopus in a corner, and a sea hare on a kelp blade.

Das Gebäude roch nach Meerwasser. Lange Korridore führten zwischen Räumen voller Aquarien hindurch. Durch die Glaswände sah Polly Sardinen, einen kleinen Oktopus in einer Ecke und einen Seehasen auf einem Tangblatt.

The researcher's name was Chiara Bianchi. She had been studying cephalopod cognition for nine years. "The octopuses are the smartest animals here," she said. "Or at least the smartest ones we are sure are conscious."

Die Forscherin hieß Chiara Bianchi. Sie studierte seit neun Jahren die Kognition von Kopffüßern. "Die Oktopusse sind die klügsten Tiere hier", sagte sie. "Oder zumindest die klügsten, von denen wir sicher sind, dass sie bewusst sind."

They came to a tall round tank. A card on the side read PASTA, 2.3KG, GPO. Inside, folded into a coil of plastic pipe, was a giant Pacific octopus. Eight arms wrapped tidily around itself. One golden eye watched through the glass.

Sie kamen zu einem hohen runden Becken. Eine Karte an der Seite trug die Aufschrift PASTA, 2,3KG, GPO. Drinnen, eingerollt in ein Stück Plastikrohr, war ein riesiger Pazifischer Oktopus. Acht Arme waren ordentlich um sich selbst gewickelt. Ein goldenes Auge beobachtete durch das Glas.

Chiara set her coffee down. "Pasta," she said, "meet Polly."

Chiara stellte ihren Kaffee ab. "Pasta", sagte sie, "das ist Polly."

The octopus did not move. But its eye stayed on Polly.

Der Oktopus bewegte sich nicht. Aber sein Auge blieb auf Polly gerichtet.

"You can perch on the rim," Chiara said. "She will not splash you. She is calm in the mornings. She gets clever in the afternoons."

"Du kannst dich auf den Rand setzen", sagte Chiara. "Sie wird dich nicht nass spritzen. Sie ist morgens ruhig. Nachmittags wird sie clever."
