Leaving the Valley

Tomas was on duty again. He found Polly at the visitor centre kiosk just after sunrise. He had a fresh Thermos of coffee. He set it on a bench and sat down.

Tomas had weer dienst. Hij vond Polly bij de kiosk van het bezoekerscentrum net na zonsopgang. Hij had een verse thermoskan koffie bij zich. Hij zette die op een bankje en ging zitten.

They did not say much for a while. Polly preened her feathers. The morning smelled of the river.

Ze zeiden een tijdje niet veel. Polly poetste haar veren. De ochtend rook naar de rivier.

"I imagine you're moving on," Tomas said.

"Ik neem aan dat je verder gaat," zei Tomas.

Polly tilted her head.

Polly kantelde haar hoofd.

He told her about the rest of the park. The high country off Tioga Road. Hetch Hetchy, the other valley to the north, dammed long ago but still beautiful. The grove of redwoods up in Tuolumne Meadows. He spoke of these places with quiet pride.

Hij vertelde haar over de rest van het park. Het hoogland langs Tioga Road. Hetch Hetchy, de andere vallei in het noorden, lang geleden afgedamd maar nog steeds prachtig. De sequoiabomen in Tuolumne Meadows. Hij sprak over deze plekken met stille trots.

"This place doesn't show you everything, even if you live here," he said. "You catch pieces. People come for three days and think they saw it. They saw a postcard." He sipped his coffee. "Better to see one piece all the way through. The peregrines? Fourteen years and I still don't know what they're going to do tomorrow."

"Deze plek laat je niet alles zien, zelfs niet als je hier woont," zei hij. "Je vangt stukjes op. Mensen komen drie dagen en denken dat ze het gezien hebben. Ze zagen een ansichtkaart." Hij nam een slok van zijn koffie. "Beter om één stuk helemaal te zien. De slechtvalken? Veertien jaar en ik weet nog steeds niet wat ze morgen gaan doen."

Polly thought about her dives off the El Capitan ledge. She had not landed cleanly once. She had also gotten less bad each time. She thought she could keep getting less bad for a lifetime.

Polly dacht aan haar duiken van de El Capitan-richel. Ze was nog nooit vlekkeloos geland. Maar ze werd wel steeds minder slecht. Ze dacht dat ze haar leven lang minder slecht kon blijven worden.

A shuttle bus pulled in. The same green bus. The same driver. "Off you go," Tomas said. He stood up.

Een pendelbus reed voor. Dezelfde groene bus. Dezelfde chauffeur. "Daar ga je," zei Tomas. Hij stond op.

Polly stretched her blue-teal wings. She lifted off from the bench, circled once over the visitor centre, and climbed. The valley dropped away. El Capitan stood on the left. Half Dome on the right.

Polly strekte haar blauwgroene vleugels. Ze steeg op van het bankje, cirkelde een keer boven het bezoekerscentrum en klom omhoog. De vallei viel weg. El Capitan stond links. Half Dome rechts.

At the rim, she banked west. Below her, a peregrine was hunting a small flock of swifts along the cliff face. She watched it for half a minute. Then she found the wind she wanted and let it carry her out of the park.

Bij de rand draaide ze naar het westen. Onder haar joeg een slechtvalk op een kleine zwerm gierzwaluwen langs de klif. Ze keek er een halve minuut naar. Toen vond ze de wind die ze wilde en liet die haar het park uit dragen.
