براميل على كل سطح

من فوق، أسطح مانهاتن لها شكل واحد. برميل خشبي مستدير فوق أربع أرجل رفيعة، وفوقه مخروط. بولي رأت براميل كثيرة، لكنها لم تعرف ما هي.

From above, the roofs of Manhattan share one shape: a round wooden barrel on four thin legs, with a cone on top. Polly had seen many but did not know what they were.

راكون نجار يعمل وحده على السطح. يضع ألواحاً خشبية في دائرة، بلا غراء وبلا مسامير. حلقات من الحديد تمسكها معاً، مشدودة من الخارج. عائلة واحدة تبني هذه البراميل منذ عام ألف وثمانمئة وستة وستين.

A raccoon carpenter worked alone on the roof, fitting wooden boards into a circle with no glue and no nails. Steel rings held it together, tightened from outside. A family business has built these since eighteen sixty-six.

تقول المدينة إن كل بناء عالٍ يجب أن يكون له برميل على السطح. ضغط الماء وحده لا يصل إلى هذا الارتفاع. الجاذبية تدفع الماء إلى أسفل عبر الأنابيب عندما يُفتح صنبور في الأسفل.

The city says any tall building must have one on the roof, since water pressure cannot reach that high alone. Gravity pushes water down through the pipes when a tap opens below.

آلاف كثيرة من هذه الخزانات تقف في أنحاء المدينة. بولي شاهدت آخر حلقة تُشد بإحكام، ثم طارت إلى السطح التالي.

Many thousands of these tanks stand across the city. Polly watched the last ring go on tight, then flew to the next roof.
